So, you’ve read about the benefits of taking CBD oil, and maybe you know a friend or family member who’s raving about how much CBD has changed their life, but you’re just not sure how to get started.

Where can you find a CBD dosing chart? How do you take CBD? Do you know how much to take? Is there an upper dosage limit you should stay within? Can you overdose on CBD? Fret not, if you’re new to the wonderful world of this ancient herb, this guide is for you. It’s designed to make it easy to get started with different products in the Zen CBD range so before long, you’ll be dosing easily and optimising all the right benefits for your needs.

How to take CBD

Firstly, if you’ve never taken CBD oil before, you might expect just to drop your dose and swallow, but since your digestive tract doesn’t absorb the full dose, some will be wasted.

Instead, make sure to use the sprays and drops sublingually, which means you dose under the tongue and hold for 60 seconds or longer. You can also rub the dose on your gums. Because the rich supply of blood vessels in the mouth contains endocannabinoid receptors, absorption through this route happens quickly and effectively.

Using a CBD dosage chart to calculate your dose

Zen’s range of organic CBD sprays come in a range of strengths from 300 mg to 3000 mg. This means the amount of CBD per drop will vary. CBD strengths are usually described as a percentage of the total volume, so from 3% to 30%, for example.

For example, a spray of 2500 mg in 20 ml gives a strength of 125 mg per ml.

How much CBD should I take?

Although it may be tempting to dive in at the deep end for maximum results, remember that more is not always better. The strength you should buy depends on what you’re taking the CBD for. When you start with CBD oil it’s best to begin dosing at the lower end of the spectrum and work upwards as you need it, monitoring how you feel. So, if you are a beginner, you may wish to start with a strength at the lower end of the scale, say a 5%.

Start with 5 drops and work upwards to 20 drops. If you don’t reach the desired effect, then move to a higher percentage.

For general health and beginners: 3 drops – 5% extract

For high-demand situations: 5 drops – 10% extract

For persisting high-demand situations: 15 drops – 30% extract

When to take CBD

Oral CBD is ideal for dosing in the moment or during a high-demand event. It enters the bloodstream and makes its way to your fat cells, staying active for several hours. How long it continues to work after that will depend on your metabolism, but you are unlikely to feel effects for more than a day.

With topical or transdermal methods such as CBD extract patches or creams, the effects take longer and the dose is released more slowly, meaning these methods are good to use when you’re anticipating a busy or demanding event. You can apply it in advance and the effects are longer lasting and more predictable.

For low-demand events, a 3% or 5% may be enough to feel more chilled, but if you’re struggling, you may wish to try a higher dose like 10% or 15%. Take a 20% to 30% strength CBD if you’re dealing with ongoing high-demand circumstances that are impacting your life.

Can I overdose on CBD?

If you are new to CBD, you may be wondering if it is possible to take too much. As part of new regulations of the CBD industry set by the Food Standards Agency, the FSA now recommends no more than 70mg a day for a healthy adult (about 28 drops of 5% CBD).

Moreover, it also cautions against vulnerable groups taking CBD at all. Therefore, if you are in this category, you should consult with a doctor before taking CBD.
